Sanrio collaboration and a Japan push fuel a rapid ascent for the virtual idol

Virtual idol PlayV is defying expectations with a rapid, sustained rise. The release of their new single “Pwu” on the 10th, paired with a Sanrio collaboration, has amplified its buzz and momentum on charts.

The agency behind PlayV, Blastr, announced that the second single album “Pwu” sold over 1.09 million copies in its first week, placing it behind BTS’s “Butter” for the all-time second-highest first-week sales by a boy group single.

The Sanrio collaboration has increased the collectability of PlayV’s releases, helping drive the strong performance.

The music video for “Pwu” topped YouTube’s daily music video chart as of the 13th and neared 10 million views by the 18th, with comments praising its warm, global appeal.

PlayV’s reach extends beyond Korea, with notable progress in Japan supported by a strategic partnership with HYBE Japan that covers music distribution, IP collaboration, and content production and promotion.

Industry observers note that PlayV stands out from traditional idol groups as the five members write and choreograph their own material, establishing a creator-led identity.

Blastr continues to invest in innovative virtual technology as it aims to pioneer a new genre of virtual idols.
