The Meeting of Gugak and K-Pop: Gumi Brand Webtoon 'Rokju Street' Unveiled

Gumi City will unveil its third brand webtoon, Rokju Street, on KakaoPage at 11:00 a.m. on the 24th. The story follows a rookie girl group leader who time-travels to the founding era of a women’s geuk troupe in 1948 and meets master Rokju Park, shaping her growth. The project consists of six episodes (720 panels) and blends gugak with K-Pop, featuring scenes from the Okjunghwa female geuk troupe and capturing the era’s theatrical atmosphere to foster intergenerational empathy. This work marks the second webtoon themed around master Rokju, following the 2023 release Oh Rokju. Born in 1905 in Goa-eup, Gwangaem-ri, Gumi, Rokju Park was a prominent female pansori master renowned for Chunhyangga and Heungbo-ga, and is noted as a major figure of the Dongpyeonje school. If Oh Rokju depicted a high school student meeting Rokju in her 20s, Rokju Street builds an independent world centered on a modern girl group protagonist against the real cultural backdrop of a female geuk troupe. In particular, the storytelling reinterprets Rokju’s leadership and artistic world with a contemporary sensibility, naturally weaving the girl group’s teamwork and growth arc. At the end of the run, a special page introducing Gumi’s tourist attractions and local information was added, further enhancing its regional value. The production is led by the Gyeongbuk Foundation for Culture and Content Promotion, with Turtle Books participating, and the writer group Jiwa-geom (artist Park Ji-hoon, writer Lee Soo-geom) handling the story and artwork to elevate quality. Additionally, to engage citizens and readers, 16 emoticons titled “Traditional Rokju-con” will be distributed for free to users who add the KakaoTalk Gumi City Hall channel. In 2023, Oh Rokju drew 850,000 views with a rating of 9.8, and in 2024, a spin-off tied to the Gumi Ramen Festival drew 940,000 views with a rating of 9.9, reflecting strong viewership and favorable reception. Kim Jang-ho, mayor of Gumi, stated that conveying Gumi’s distinctive cultural resources through a popular platform like a webtoon could attract more subscribers and effectively showcase the city’s charms, and that efforts to enhance Gumi’s city brand through local-focused cultural content will continue.
