Debuting in Drag: The Fallout for Fans Duped by a Survival-Style Underground Idol

A film that traces the lineage of the K-pop horror-tinged cinema, Underground Idol, is set for release on November 20, with teaser posters and press stills released to whet audiences’ appetites. The Underground Idol centers on a survival idol who debuts with a K-pop boy group, not as the top star in a world ruled by K-pop, but through a comedic lens that highlights the harsh realities behind idol culture and offers humor and satire that defies clichés. The teaser poster focuses on Seung-hyun, a survival idol who debuts with the K-pop boy group BZ-BOYS (청공소년), and Jin, the leader who becomes increasingly aware of his presence, capturing the glittering moments of youth chasing dreams amid the tough life of underground idols. Seung-hyun is portrayed by Yeom Seung-i, an actor known for playing romantic leads in stage and web dramas, who brings a memorable contrast between his gentle, offstage persona and his tougher, in-character side. In the film, Seung-hyun joins the group by disguising himself as a man, delivering a performance that blends a soft, innocent exterior with a rugged, edge-of-dare vibe when in disguise. The poster’s line, “Going male idol, not female idol! The biggest turning point in an idol’s life?” hints at the unpredictable debut journey ahead for Seung-hyun and his fellow members, piquing audience curiosity. The portrayals by the actual members of Cheonggongsonyeon in their idol roles add a level of realism and immersion to the film’s core message. Cheonggongsonyeon, a five-member group under Chrome Entertainment, debuted on June 17, 2019, and means “Boys of the Blue Space,” a name that signals bright energy in youthful spaces. The film’s depiction emphasizes the behind-the-scenes struggles of underground idols, reinforcing the movie’s core theme of growth, conflict, and resilience. Underground Idol is scheduled to hit theaters on November 20.
