From Word of Mouth to No. 1: Korean Variety Show Bounces Back to Top Ratings with Bold, Addictive Content

Channel A’s Detectives’ Business Secrets climbs to the top as it explores real-life cases with dramatic flair.

As of the 17th, Channel A’s reality program Detectives’ Business Secrets has been riding high on audience enthusiasm. In the Seoul metropolitan area, it posted a 3.0% audience share, with a 4.1% one-minute peak, ranking No. 1 in its time slot among general entertainment channels.

Premiering in January last year, the program dramatizes real cases as it unfolds investigations. The first half, “Detective 24 Hours,” follows detectives as they receive assignments, pursue clues, and piece together leads. The second half, “Case Notebook,” reimagines real cases as dramas, often focusing on affairs; in addition there are stories involving gaslighting, midlife romance scams, coin scams, and marital fraud.

On the latest episode, the marital detective duo—Heo Hyun-jin and Jeong Ga-in, a real-life couple—made their first appearance, working together with a natural, affectionate on-site teamwork. Heo said, “If we work as detectives, we’d be together all day, right?” and added, “Detective work keeps me away from home a lot, but being on a team with one another, I really like it.”

They investigated a case about a car sold in 2012 that a client wants to recover to honor his late father. The client explained that the car carried family memories, saying, “We used to travel with it, and I always kept it in the family because of my father.” The car’s current owner, meanwhile, said the vehicle remains a meaningful family heirloom, making it hard to part with. Despite that, the client said, “Even just the car is still out there is enough; I’m grateful for this outcome.” The segment concluded with a surprise arranged by the detectives, prompting new reflections on memory and letting go.

Viewers responded warmly, praising the program for delivering authentic, unpredictable real-life stories and eager for it to stay on air. As always, the show continues to mix documentary-style reporting with dramatized reenactments, keeping audiences engaged and curious about what comes next.
