A Church of England school in southern England has banned songs from the Netflix animated film K-Pop Demon Hunters (KadeHun), drawing attention to the show’s content. On the 14th of this month, the school told parents that some members of the school community found references to “demons” in the KadeHun songs uncomfortable. The school asked that children refrain from singing these songs at school out of respect for those beliefs. KadeHun centers on Huntstrix, a girl group who fight demons with songs, who are disguised as a boy band called the Lion Boyz. Its songs, including Golden, Soda Pop, and Your Idol, have climbed mainstream charts worldwide, signaling its global popularity. The school serves preschool and early elementary grades. One parent told reporters that the matter is a lighthearted issue: their daughter is into K-pop and friends love it too; it’s a harmless, small matter that can boost confidence. The school noted that while the songs carry positive messages like teamwork, courage, and kindness, they respect parental rights to decide what their children are exposed to and acknowledge that some within the school community may find references to demons uncomfortable. The notice also emphasized helping children understand that others may hold different beliefs and urged fostering respect for those beliefs.
