Self-Objectification Is Crucial: Idol-Turned Jin Young Reveals the Secret to a 15-Year Run in Showbiz (Bu-semi)

Self-objectification, Jin Young says, is crucial to sustaining a long career in showbiz. He explains that he often reminds himself, “I’m not that good yet,” a mindset he believes has helped him endure for 15 years since debuting with B1A4 in 2011, expanding his scope from idol to producer and actor without major controversy.

As an ENFP, Jin Young describes his outlook as positive, noting that difficult times are easier to endure when one believes favorable outcomes will come. He also attributes part of his longevity to caution, expressing gratitude for the chance to perform while building memories with fans, without claiming an absolute standard of integrity.

Regarding Bu-semi, he hopes it will be regarded as a well-made drama. He recalls that he has consistently answered that he aims for a “well-made” product, and that achieving even one person’s sense of quality makes it worthwhile. The experience felt like a gift and a challenge, meaningful and precious.

He reflects on past roles, including the experience of a character who undergoes a soul swap in a film released in 2019, which earned praise. In June of this year, Park Seong-woong, an esteemed senior actor, joined his agency, reinforcing a sense of kinship within the team. Jin Young appreciates Park Seong-woong’s support, calling him almost like a father figure.

Rather than chasing fixed milestones, Jin Young emphasizes going with the flow and not forcing a specific outcome from opportunities. He notes that his previous plans—such as becoming a certain kind of person or aiming for particular awards—have given way to a more natural career progression with time. As his experience grows, his acting aspirations deepen: he wants to convey natural performances to audiences, preferring dialogue delivered as if in conversation rather than simply “doing well.”

He admires performers Park Jung-min and Son Seok-gu, feeling that they embody real-life presence, and says he hopes to model himself after them in the future.
