The Latest Korean Film Surpasses 2.4 Million Admissions... headed to Home Screens Soon (+What the Film Is About)

Boss, the hit Korean comedy-action, moves to IPTV/VOD just over a month after its theatrical release.

The Korean comic-action film Boss, which dominated theaters this autumn, is moving to the home screen a little over a month after its release. The film has surpassed 2.16 million admissions, and it is being released on IPTV and VOD platforms simultaneously to reach audiences who found theatrical viewing difficult. The producers plan to attract both cinema audiences and OTT viewers to extend the film’s lifespan.

The service is available on major IPTV platforms, including GenieTV (KT), Btv (SK), and LG U+ TV, as well as Home Choice (cable TV VOD), SkyLife, wavve, Coupang Play, Google Play, Apple TV, and Cinefox. Boss opened for simultaneous release in theaters and IPTV/VOD services starting on the 13th. This multi-platform rollout underscores the trend of releasing films on OTT shortly after theatrical runs.

Boss is a comedy-action piece directed by Ra Hee-chan, imagining a world where the next boss must be chosen by who avoids the position rather than who takes it. The film’s brisk pace and character-driven humor have drawn audiences. The ensemble—Jo Woo-jin, Jung Kyung-ho, Park Ji-hwan, and Lee Gyu-hyeong—drives the narrative.

Additional standout supporting cast includes Hwang Woo-se, Jung Yu-jin, and Ko Chang-seok, with Lee Sung-min joining to bolster the lineup. Online reactions have kept the interest high, with characters’ distinctive actions and lines becoming memes. In terms of reasons for early VOD release, industry dynamics after the holiday period and demand on platforms are cited.

Audience reception overall has been that the film is easy to watch and laugh at. Critics note the balance of comedy and action as a strength, with the four leads’ chemistry highlighted. There is potential for a second wave of performance on home screens, though actual viewership depends on platform metrics.

Boss’s trajectory has already exceeded 2.43 million cumulative admissions, and when IPTV/OTT viewership is included, it could make the fall Korean film landscape one of the strongest in recent memory. The move between cinema and OTT may serve as a reference model for future Korean film distribution. The film’s journey illustrates how the market is merging theater with digital platforms.
