A shift from a dated silhouette to premium, versatile outerwear redefining everyday style.
Once mocked as “dad fashion,” lightweight padded jackets are surging in popularity across generations, evolving from mere innerwear to premium outerwear that many consumers now seek. The trend is fueling demand as lightweight padding is deemed practical for a wide temperature range, making it a must-have item for both older shoppers and the 2030 generation.
Data from major platforms shows the breadth of this shift. On 29CM, lightweight padding transactions jumped 120 percent year over year between October 1 and November 13, with search volumes rising more than 170 percent. KakaoStyle’s Zigzag reported a 111 percent increase in transactions and a 144 percent rise in searches over the same period. Meanwhile, fashion retailers highlight that pads are now released in ultra-thin materials with roomy silhouettes and a broader color palette, expanding consumer choice.
Industry voices point to climate patterns as a key driver behind the sustained demand for lightweight padding. A fashion executive notes that the increasing temperature fluctuations and broader seasonal boundaries are pushing brands to diversify materials and designs to maintain a competitive edge. The market is responding with a broader range of lightweight outerwear, underscoring a trend toward functional yet stylish daily wear that doubles as a fashion statement.
Retailers are accelerating product launches and expanding inventories to capitalize on the momentum. For example, LF’s outdoor brand, TetonBros, is increasing lightweight padding production by more than twentyfold to meet rising demand for versatile outerwear. Reebok has also launched a full line of lightweight padding with features balancing warmth and lightness, while other brands have expanded lightweight outerwear offerings to capture share in a competitive market.
As the year progresses, industry observers expect the lightweight padding craze to persist, driven by ongoing design and material innovations and the appeal of practical, fashion-forward outerwear for the 2030 generation.
