Netflix has wired Sony Pictures, the studio behind the hit animated film KDEH, a cash bonus of about $15 million (roughly 219 billion won). The move is described as a gesture to help accelerate a sequel deal with Sony Pictures’ film chief Tom Rossman and his team.
The bonus is framed as recognition for KDEH’s success and a path to a faster follow-up, with insiders noting that Netflix opted to reward Sony for its achievements while laying groundwork for the next installment. The arrangement is said to reflect Netflix’s intent to streamline post-release negotiations for KDEH’s sequel.
Reports also indicate that Netflix initially funded KDEH’s production cost at $100 million and later paid an additional $25 million to cover fees and to secure first-option rights that allow ongoing streaming on Netflix’s platform. The $25 million figure is described as encompassing both fees and the first-option right.
The revenue-sharing terms for KDEH 2 have not been disclosed. Nevertheless, the deal is viewed as beneficial for Netflix, enabling the company to continue promoting the KDEH initiative within the broader K-pop movement. KDEH has already amassed substantial viewership, underscoring the franchise’s global appeal.
