Injury-driven grit from veteran players fuels rising viewership as the program refreshes its lineup
The baseball reality program centers on retired pro players reuniting to tackle the sport again, and ratings have started to rebound as the season kicks off. The comeback is driven by the players’ willingness to push through injuries and by a more engaging narrative, with team chemistry improving as episodes progress.
Notable players, including Yoon Seok-min, Kim Tae-kyun, Lee Dae-hyung, Kwon Hyuk, and Yoon Hee-sang, push through injuries, displaying veteran poise that helps secure wins despite not being fully recovered. Kim Tae-kyun, who had relied on drawing walks early in the season, delivered a solid hit in a game against Konkuk University, signaling improvement, while Yoon Hee-sang’s late-game focus against a top rival demonstrated resilience after an elbow injury. The show’s producers have acknowledged the challenges of aging athletes, emphasizing that the players strive to give their best at every moment to connect with viewers.
CP Seong Chi-kyung, the show’s chief producer, explained that injuries have been a factor as aging players mean more injuries, but he stressed that the team intends to honor the players’ wishes and continue delivering the story to fans. As the early episodes focused more on the athletes’ narratives and on-field action, later episodes have begun to weave in more entertainment elements to heighten interest. The captain, Kim Tae-kyun, has led from the dugout, with teammates in the bullpen providing banter that adds to the appeal. When Kim’s occasional frustrations surfaced, coach and players engaged in lively exchanges that have become a talking point for viewers.
Besides professional signees, standout amateur players have also contributed to the appeal, with recruitment battles highlighting the show’s depth as injuries are overcome and performances improve. CP Seong remarked that editors have balanced entertainment elements with character-driven storytelling, aiming to let audiences see the players’ growth and resilience. While the emphasis remains on on-field action, the evolving dynamics—both in the dugout and among the cast—continue to draw viewers to this refreshed take on the original baseball variety show.
