Korean cinema’s Chungmuro festival spotlights rising talent with The Mirror
Cha Beom-seol, a first-year student in the English Language and Literature department at Chosun University, won the Silver prize at the 15th Chungmuro Short and Independent Film Festival’s Blue Ribbon Film Awards. The ceremony was held on November 1 at the Youth Center in Seoul’s Jung-gu district. Chungmuro, Korea’s film hub, is home to a festival that serves as a bridge between the ‘film soul’ of veteran filmmakers and the ‘film spirit’ of aspiring young directors, continually discovering promising new talent.
Cha Beom-seol’s film, The Mirror, was produced under the 2024 Gwangju Youth Film Academy’s production support and, following last year’s prize at the academy, also earned the Silver at the Blue Ribbon. The film centers on an emblematic look at the unseen cruelty of emotional abuse, a form of child maltreatment not easily visible.
The Mirror follows a boy named Tae-in who, while caring for a stag beetle larva, repeats obsession and violence, thereby symbolizing the cycle of abuse and the emotional scars left by disconnection. Beom-seol has said, “I wanted to tell the harshness of unseen emotional violence within child abuse,” and added, “I hope this work will be a turning point for someone’s thinking.”
Mentor-director Cho Chan-cheon of the Gwangju Youth Film Academy praised Beom-seol, stating, “Cha Beom-seol demonstrates solid storytelling and a sharp sensibility, a rare talent who produces high-quality work.” He noted that the recognition at this prestigious Chungmuro festival is a great pride for the local film community and expressed hope that Beom-seol will grow into a future leader of Korea’s film industry.
