The Korean Film Critics Association, which co-selects the Our Times of the Movie series (Usiyan), released its eighth installment today. The Night of Memories horror series continues with its second entry, Na Hong-jin’s 2016 film Gokseong (The Wailing), following the earlier piece on Pamyo. Gokseong introduced occult elements such as gu-ma, shamanism, and zombies that set it apart from other Korean horror films at its release. The film’s symbolic and metaphorical elements, and its narrative design that engages the audience, helped fuel a Gokseong syndrome. Today’s report will explore the background and meaning behind the film through interviews with director Na Hong-jin and lead actor Hwang Jung-min. Usiyan will continue coverage in two more installments of the horror-film series Night of Memories after Pamyo and Gokseong. Our Times of the Movie can be found on the site or app in the Usiyan corner.
