Kim Hyang-gi returns to the screen as a mother in a post-war Jeju drama
Kim Hyang-gi stars in Hanlan, a Korean film set in Jeju in 1948, which has confirmed a November 26 release and released its first trailer on the 20th. The trailer opens with Ajin (Kim Hyang-gi) fleeing to Hallasan with her daughter Haeseng (Kim Min-chae) from a punitive force. The mother-daughter separation tugs at viewers as their parting unfolds. Proclamations accompany scenes of villagers being massacred, evoking the brutal realities of that era. News of a village burning reaches Ajin, prompting her descent to rescue her daughter, signaling Kim Hyang-gi’s powerful turn as a mother. Set in the heart of Jeju, the film follows the duo’s struggle to survive amid persecution, underscoring the nobility of life. The project marks Kim Hyang-gi’s screen comeback as she returns to the screen in a mother role after starring in Witness and the Along With the Gods series. Ajin is a Jeju haenyeo who will stop at nothing to protect her daughter Haeseng. Directed and written by Ha Myung-mi, whose directorial debut Her Hobby won awards at the 27th Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival, the film promises a delicate, emotive narrative. Hanlan opens on November 26.
